It seems like such a simple thing, such a no-brainer type of thing, the kind of issue where it's ridiculous that we're even still talking about it. But we are and not only is that incredibly sad that in 2013 people can't marry the person they love, but it's also extremely upsetting that it's been faced with so much opposition.
I am fortunate that I can marry the person I love but last night I was surrounded by people that can't. It's not fair and it's not right. In the crowd was a couple that had been together for forty years. That's the kind of love that people dream of, someone to spend our lives with, to grow old with, to drink sweet tea on the back porch with the grandchildren playing in the garden type of love. But that couple who have shared so much of their lives together are denied something that those of us that can get married easily take for granted.
It's times like this that bring me back to the words of my co-worker years ago when he asked me why my fiance and I aren't married yet. Sure, we've got our own reasons for delaying the wedding and it's not a big deal to us. But, I remember him telling me this- "It's a big deal when you can't." And he was right. Getting to marry the person I fell in love with was always an option for me. I'm lucky like that. And I've always taken it for granted.
I believe that the U.S. and even the world is ready for marriage equality. It's time for this issue to become a non-issue. Marriage shouldn't just be an option for the few relationships that meet the status quo. It's a right that all couples in love should be able to enjoy. I want to see anyone that wants to get married able to do so and finding enjoyment with the person you love shouldn't just be something that exists only in romance novels.
I know that this will happen in my lifetime and I hope that those people in power are able to see the common sense of letting it happen today.
Thank you for reading this post. I know it was long and there were no beautiful cover images to go along with it. Good morning everyone and hopefully this can be a great week.
