In the winter of 1864, in eastern Colorado Territory, Douglas Carr is a soldier in the Colorado Territory Militia when he makes the worst mistake of his life. In the wake of the massacre he participated in, he flees the militia to try to lose himself in Denver City among the people going west to seek their fortunes in the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. After a couple fingers of whiskey one night he agrees to track down a man. It should have been an easy job and a quick pocket full of coins. Instead he gets Elias.
With the Civil War nearly over, Elias could have been a free man, but instead he took off running and his former master has hunted him from Alabama west to the frontier. He claims Elias stole from him, though what little he did take was only recompense in his mind for years of enslavement and torture. He'll die before he allows any man to take him back to that dark place. Since the war ended he has managed to evade every tracker that has been sent on his trail, but this new one isn't as easy to shake.
When the two men meet in the middle of a deadly snowstorm, they're forced to put aside their objectives as they work toward the singular goal of survival. But as the snow continues on and secrets begin to come out, neither of the men can be certain of the other, much less themselves.
